DUE TO COVID 19: Reservations required to ice skate, whether you bring your own or rent skates.

Howard Park’s 16,000 square foot ice trail and pond is a premier winter destination for the South Bend region.  The ice trail features rolling hills and soft curves that provide skaters with a diverse terrain when making their way around the loop. The ice pond is attached to the ice trail but provides a more traditional skating experience with an isolated skating area that can be used for learning to skate or skating activities like broomball.

Ice skating is available throughout the cold-weather season, 6 days a week. Admission to the skate trail and pond and skate rentals are available at the support building located on the east side of the park.

The upside about making a reservation: no lines, no waiting and no crowds. Limited spots available in 2-hour skating sessions will allow skaters to safely skate and social distance!

Masks must be worn at all times – whether indoors or outdoors – even while skating. Masks will NOT be provided.

Make sure to layer up, dress warm and be prepared to be outside for the majority of your visit as the Event Center will be used solely for private events and restroom use. Due to state executive order 20-48, capacities in the Centier Bank Commons will be limited to 50 persons and loitering will not be permitted.

All skate changing will take place outdoors. Additional seating and heating elements have been added outdoors to provide space for skate changing and warming up during Zamboni breaks. Still, your first plan of attack to stay warm should be to layer up and dress warm. As a backup plan, visit the South Bend Chocolate Café to Go stand for a warm cup of hot chocolate!

To minimize traffic indoors, lockers will not be available inside the Event Center. Cubbies will be available outdoors but will not be monitored or secured. Please plan to leave your valuable items at home or with you at all times.

For those interested in a less crowded experience, consider visiting the Ice Trail during the week (Tuesday – Thursday, Friday afternoons for kids and families) to avoid the days and times with the highest volume of people.

Though skate rental is included for free with all admission purchases, bringing your own skates provides another opportunity to bypass any lines and get on the ice sooner. On peak days, our line concierge will be able to assist those who brought their own skates to immediately check-in, get their skate ticket, and keep it moving on their way to the Ice Trail.

As we continue to monitor the ongoing pandemic and its impact in our area, these policies may be subject to change.
