Forever Learning: Lighthouses

10:00 AM  – 11:20 AM

Marie Blunt, M.Min.

Location: Howard Park 1

Lighthouses were yesterday’s vitally important navigational beacons.  Today they may be seen as nostalgic reminders of a simpler time.  Or, do we hold a romanticized view of these majestic towers? What continues to draw us to these majestic towers?

This class will explore key inventions of the period such as the Fresnel Lens and Argand Lamp, various types of lighthouse architecture as well as the people (and animals) who kept them then and continue to keep them now.  Interesting facts, such as where the keeper went potty, and amazing trivia (what’s a pharologist?) will also be covered in this highly interactive, photo filled class.

The class includes an all-day four-lighthouse field trip. Students will gather to carpool, drive to Old Michigan City Lighthouse and Michigan City East Pierhead Lighthouse, enjoy a sack lunch, then drive to St Joseph North Pier Inner and Outer Lighthouses before returning to FLI. While the instructor will help facilitate carpools, ultimately the responsibility for transportation belongs to the student and is not included in tuition. During this trip, our class will be treated to private tours of both Old Michigan City Lighthouse and St Joseph North Pier Inner Lighthouse. Fees for these two tours are charged by the lighthouse organizations and this additional $10 ($5 per lighthouse tour per person) is the responsibility of the student. The lighthouse field trip is planned for 9 am to 4:30 pm May 4, 2022, with a rain date of May 11, 2022.

The optional textbook for this class, The Lighthouse Primer, is available on Amazon for $9 plus shipping, but may be purchased from the instructor on the first day of class for $7.

No class will be held on March 30, 2022. The last day of this 8-session class will be May 11, 2022
